Suggestions on where to move in the US?

Main Post:

I’m looking for a fresh start. I have lived in California my entire life but am ready to pack up to start a new chapter else where.

I love being outdoors and cooler weather. Looking for somewhere quiet, affordable with a small town vibe but still provides a social life and solid community foundation.

I have a border collie so I’m definitely looking for somewhere she would enjoy and we can potentially buy land and build a home.

I’ve done some research, Idaho has stuck out to me. Colorado and Utah as well but curious if anyone has specific cities in these states that they would recommend or any other states? I’m open minded to any suggestions.

Top Comment: If you’re a woman and might need healthcare, or if you’re a man who wants to have a woman partner, (who will need healthcare), I wouldn’t suggest Idaho.

What moving tips would you guys have?

Main Post:

I’m in my college years and so I’ll be moving a bunch. Currently I’ve been using these big heavy duty storage bins from Home Depot as a way to move stuff without using cardboard boxes but then I thought “If these exist, why don’t people use these more?”

So now I’m here. Got any moving tips?

Top Comment: If using boxes: Get boxes with the same dimensions. Write their contents on 2 sides of the box. You won't need to lift each box to find out what's in each. Use stickers or write on the box where they should go (kitchen, living room, bedroom, etc.) Furniture dollies are awesome if you have lots of flat distance to move your furniture. Straps > appliance dolly. Always lift using your knees instead of your back. Furniture drapes prevent furniture damage during the move. Get those. Keep yourself and your friends hydrated. If you have lots of people to help you, you'd want a team to help you after the move to place stuff around, install the blinds on the windows, clean the floor, etc. You'll be exhausted after moving everything, so their help is invaluable. Legal advice, though IANAL: If you're renting, take pictures of every room of the new apartment to provide proof of the state of the apartment when you moved in, especially if there are things that are defective/broken. This may be important later if your landlord is a dick and wants to deduct money off your deposit.

Where should I move?

Main Post:

Hi friends, looking for some advice. I'm 26F originally from Florida and then moved to a few places across the country for work after college (Rochester New York & Beloit, Wisconsin). It is my goal this year to move to the tech industry and move from Wisconsin. Wisconsin is miserable for me. What I'm looking for in a place:

  1. Good job opportunities
  2. Not miserable winters and decent weather overall
  3. Genuinley good and diverse people
  4. Vegan food and good grocery stores
  5. Good place to find a long term partner to settle down with
  6. Blend of interesting things to do and nature

I did the small town thing for the last few years and it's not entirely my thing. Not saying I need a huge city of anything but I don't want to have to drive 30 minutes to go to a chipotle or an hour for a trader Joe's.

Top Comment: Look for college towns. Decent ones have a lot of your list. Or near ones in urban areas.

How do I locally move?

Main Post:

Every time I’ve moved it’s been long distance and I didn’t own furniture so I just loaded up my car, drove a few hours, then moved in. I live alone in southeastern Virginia and I want to move locally (~30 minutes away) and I’m confused how the process works. I’d be keeping the same job and everything just moving to a new apartment.

I do have furniture so I’d need to hire movers but do I just rent a uhaul and have them fill it? If I do that, would they just follow me to the new place and help me unload it? Or would it be easier to just have them do everything? How much should my two leases overlap? Companies don’t actually give you estimates unless you’re super serious so I can’t price compare and don’t want to spent like $2k to move everything.

I live on the 3rd floor with has exterior stairs and would be moving a couch, a bed, a desk, a coffee table, an entertainment center, and also a large Christmas tree. Does anyone have an idea of how much this would cost or have recommendations for good and cheap companies?

Top Comment: You can rent a U-haul, and then hire some people to help load and unload. You can probably ask your local U-Haul where you can find such people, I am not sure if there are any big companies that do that. Asking friends or gym buddies for help is common, with you buying dinner as compensation. Or you can hire a company that will provide both truck and movers. "Two guys and a truck" is one such company. And yes, their quoting process is complicated. As for timing, you could move in one day, but only if you have everything packed and boxed, which could take a week or two. If you are less organized, have a week of overlap. You will need to clean the old place, which is way easier once the stuff is gone.
